If you find — or think you have found — a landmine, unexploded ordnance or any suspicious item, following a few simple rules can save your life and the lives of others.
DO
• STOP as soon as you notice the item.
• Stay calm and warn others to keep away.
• Move away carefully, following exactly the route you came in by.
• Mark or remember the location from a safe distance.
• Report it immediately to the NEHA hazard hotline or local authorities.
DO NOT
• Do NOT touch, pick up, kick or throw the item.
• Do NOT move it or attempt to make it safe.
• Do NOT light a fire near it or put it in a fire.
• Do NOT take a shortcut through an area you know or suspect to be dangerous.
• Do NOT collect explosive items or scrap metal from former battle areas.
Remember: an item can remain deadly for many years, even if it looks old, rusty or harmless. When in doubt, stay back and report it.
